(The jury is still out on these two. Lindsay come back!)
The number one double standard I find in my ward is that it's not ok for straight guys to be too close, too friendly, or buddy buddy which each other (which I agree to an extent...) but girls can practically be on each others laps stroking one another's hair and it's totally Kosher. Now girls you might not think this is harmless, but let's switch the roles for a sec. Sure, you might walk hand in hand, have sleepovers in the same bed, or kiss each other jokingly, but can you even imagine this happening to one of your straight guy friends? (I just vomited on my keyboard at that mental image...excuse me as I clean up.)
No, you would think they were a couple of Sigfried and Roy's! So when you start spending all(this is not an exaggeration...) your time with your roommate and you both get these super cute pixie haircuts, don't be surprised when we get a little suspect and hesitant to ask you out. The part that I don't get is that you are constantly connected to the hip. I hope this lesbianistic approach isn't a way to fill a void. Are you trying to play out the mission you didn't serve, devoid of all the tracting and isolation? However, if you are a member of the GLBT society, great! But could you at least give us a heads up. I mean, knowing is half the battle...
She probably went gay from knowing too many guys like you.
ReplyDeleteamen to that. you guys need to seriously grow up. i pitty the girl who gets stuck marrying you. assholes.
ReplyDeleteThat would be "Sigfried and Roys"... no need for the apostrophe. http://www.freelancecopywriting.biz/USERIMAGES/angryflower.gif
ReplyDeleteI personally think this site is hilarious. people who take offense need to calm down.
ReplyDeleteI agree with alex. it's all in good fun. If you take it too seriously, i propose they write an article on having a stick too far up your butt you can't get a joke.
ReplyDeleteThis is great. A ubiquitous problem.
ReplyDeleteI do agree that some girls are a little to clingy with eachother, but then I remember how old (or young might be the more appropriate word) they are and I can breathe again. I usually don't worry about how close a man is with another man, and in some cases find relief in knowing they have someone they can be close to. Usually it is hysterical when I see guys being a little fruity with eachother because we all know they are 1 just being funny (because they are uncomfortable[scared of showing vulnerability] being themselves) and 2 trying to show off to the girls how fun they are to cuddle with.
ReplyDeleteI should comment however that you are being a little immature in your assumptions. Not all cuddly girls are attached at the hip. Women fulfill emotional intimacy in many ways, and intimacy need not be sexual. When you (men) were young, touch was more important to you. Societal norms have perverted your image and need of this, as a culture. Families used to share entire beds, there doesn't have to be something wrong with it. Try seeing us, for a moment, from our POV, if you were less of an ignorant man maybe we would more inclined to want to be the woman of your dreams.
Now girls, this should go without saying, but this whole blog is all about the things men think we are doing wrong, so go ahead and take the plunge, for a moment and look from their POV.
Cuddling is fun, bottom line. It should always be appropriate, but we all could use a little more luvin'.
I couldn't agree more. When did sacrament meeting turn into a girl-on-girl petting zoo? I brought a non-member friend to church and she couldn't get past the back tickling happening in the next pew.
ReplyDeleteAnd here I thought all you male types got off watching some faux-lesbo activity. Hunh. Okay.
ReplyDeleteAnd on another note, after the free publicity ya'll got from BYU 100 Hour Board, I wonder what kind of response you've been getting. Personally, the name of your blog tripped me up for a while. I assumed (incorrectly) that it was along the lines of "Why Mormon Girls (Choose To) Stay Single" and boy, was I wrong!
Well, actually, now that I think about it, maybe that really IS the meaning...they turn you off with the shallow things up front so that they don't have to put up with your b.s. for eternity?
It's all in fun, though. I get it.
While the entire tone of this blog reeks of some guys trying a little too hard, you do make some good points. I brought a visitor to church one day (Easter sunday--she was catholic) and she was genuinely perplexed by the girls playing with each other's hair in the pew in front of us. I tried to explain that they're not lesbians, just friendly.
ReplyDeleteMormon culture creates lesbians. I mean, if this is my option, I'll take a big dyke any day...
ReplyDeleteWow, so many people are probably itching to e-slap you right now. Me, I just keep wiping away the tears of mirth. Honestly. God bless satire.
ReplyDeleteYah....On that note there's a particular girl I know who is ALWAYS holding hands with her "bestie" at church. Really?! You're kidding me right? I'm a girl and when my friend comes up beside me and links arms all I can think is....uhhh did I just get thrown in a Jane Austen novel? Elizabeth, where's Kitty. Didn't Mr. Bingley look smashing at church today...
ReplyDeleteand believe me I'm not one of those girls who's trying to agree with you to "seem cool and jiggy with it" I'm married and can't seem to find many cool down to earth girls to hang out with here in Provo. and my husbands testosterone is driving me crazy! I need ONE girls night...JUST ONE night full of estrogen so we can be in a circle throw our shoes in the middle and dance...just dance (Dane Cook speaks the truth)
I miss the midwest...where there were normal girls (and guys for that matter too)
I'm so sick of seeing men in tiny tight pants and a v-neck tshirts with a scarf thing tied around there neck and their dumb little half mullet half faux hawk hair styles. It's not sexy, you look like you stepped out of a German techno club. Ew...California isn't that cool. It's just a state like the rest of the 50 states...so stop saying your look is so steazy. It's not.
That's a little off topic though.
In case this fact hasn't hit you over the head yet, women are different from men. We're a lot more affectionate with all friends: male and female. Women also cling to each other when the men around them aren't following through with their responsibilities. So, if you want to start pointing fingers, look in the mirror. Secondly, if you want to try walking in sling backs and pumps and tell me how comfortable it is and tell me you wouldn't rather be wearing a pair of flip flops, then be my guest. And lastly, the make-up thing, how on earth do you expect girls to be willing to go without make-up when nine out of ten men I have ever talked to ALWAYS prefer their girlfriend to be wearing make-up. Granted, there is a line that a lot of girls cross, but I think until you're held to the same standard you can take all your word vomit that you call a blog and shove it up your ass.
